Terms of Use

1. Agreement

By downloading or using Ferric you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, do not use the app. Ferric is made by Iván Montiel Cardona (“we”, “us”); you can reach a human at [email protected].

Ferric is distributed through Apple’s App Store, so Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. Where these terms and Apple’s standard EULA disagree, Apple’s EULA prevails. Read Apple’s standard EULA .

2. Your licence to use Ferric

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Ferric on the Apple devices you own or control. You may not resell it, rent it, redistribute it, or attempt to extract or repackage the toolchain it ships with. Ferric’s name, icon and design are ours; the open-source components it builds on remain under their own licences.

3. Your code is yours

Everything you write in Ferric belongs to you. The app compiles and runs your code on your device; we do not collect it, read it or claim any right over it, and we place no restriction on what you do with what you build. The one feature that sends your code anywhere is GitHub Copilot: optional, off until you connect it, and running on your own subscription. See the Privacy page for the full picture. Privacy.

4. Plans and purchases

Ferric has a free tier that stays real: the single-file Scratchpad, full on-device compile and run, 49 interactive Rust lessons, the bundled stable Rust and the new stable releases, and no account. Ferric Pro adds Cargo projects with crates.io dependencies, Git, the Raspberry Pi module, new Rust versions as they are published, and the beta.

The purchases are: Ferric Pro, a one-time purchase of US$29.99, which includes 12 months of coverage; Pro Update, an optional US$14.99 purchase that adds 12 more months of coverage; and the Raspberry Pi module, a one-time purchase of US$4.99. Pro Update is bought once and does not renew by itself. None of these purchases is a subscription.

The 14-day trial gives you full Pro for 14 days, free. There is no charge and no automatic renewal: it simply ends and the app returns to the free tier. A trial that has already run cannot be started again.

All purchases happen in-app through Apple. Apple takes the payment, holds your billing details and issues the receipt — we never see your card. Prices are shown in your App Store storefront and may differ by region and over time; the price you see at purchase is the price that applies. Refunds are handled by Apple under its own policy; if something went wrong, write to us anyway and we will help you make the case.

5. What you keep

Ferric Pro is a one-time purchase and it includes 12 months of coverage. When the coverage ends, you keep everything published up to that day, forever: the app's features and the Rust versions for Cargo projects. This is the same model as a perpetual fallback licence: you do not lose what you paid for. The Pro features of the app (Cargo projects, crates.io dependencies, Git and the microcontroller module) stay with you. The app decides this on-device from your App Store receipt.

Rust versions released after your coverage ends need active coverage to be used in Cargo projects, and so do Rust betas. You can add 12 more months with Pro Update (US$14.99), a single optional purchase that does not renew by itself. The Scratchpad (the free tier) always uses the latest stable Rust, with or without Pro.

Fixes, performance, security and support for new iPadOS versions reach everyone, always, without renewing. We do not use pressure to make you buy: a new Rust is announced with one line in the app pill, with no pop-ups, no countdowns and no last-chance notices. New hardware families (ESP32, for example) are separate add-ons, for everyone. A Ferric 2 would be a separate purchase; it will only exist if there is a real rewrite, and we will not close off 1.x artificially to force one. The Raspberry Pi module unlocks the Pico, Pico W, Pico 2 and Pico 2 W in your Ferric for good: it does not need Pro, and it comes included with Pro.

6. Third-party crates

In Pro, Ferric can download packages (“crates”) from crates.io that you ask for as dependencies. Those packages are written by third parties, come under their own licences, and are not ours — we do not review, endorse or warrant them. Choosing and complying with a dependency’s licence is your call, exactly as it would be on a desktop machine.

7. Acceptable use

Use Ferric lawfully. Do not use it to build or distribute malware, to break into systems you do not own, to infringe someone else’s rights, or to work around the App Store’s purchase and licensing checks. Do not attempt to disable, reverse-engineer or circumvent the licensing in the app beyond what the law expressly allows you.

8. What Ferric is, and is not

Ferric runs a real Rust compiler inside the WebKit sandbox on your iPad. That environment has real limits: there are no operating-system threads, crates with native C dependencies do not build, and very large projects can exhaust the memory iOS gives the app. We say so plainly on this site and in the app rather than pretending otherwise, and some features are labelled experimental because they are.

Features described on this website as planned or coming soon are exactly that: they are not part of what you buy today, and we make no promise about when — or whether — they ship.

9. No warranty

Ferric is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will compile every program you throw at it. Keep your own backups of work that matters to you.

10. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost profits or lost data, arising from your use of Ferric. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, and you may have consumer rights in your country that these terms do not affect.

11. Changes and termination

We may update these terms as Ferric changes. The current version always lives at getferric.dev/terms, with the date at the top; if a change is material we will say so in the app’s release notes. Continuing to use Ferric after a change means you accept it. You can stop using Ferric at any time by deleting it; we may end your licence if you materially breach these terms.
